ALZHEIMER
FAMILY EDUCATOR PROGRAM

Caring for someone with Alzheimer's can overwhelm a family's best
efforts.
Trained by the Alzheimer's Association, Family Educators help
families to care for loved ones with Alzheimer's at home for as
long as possible by teaching them about the disease process and
its impact on functioning.
Coaching families how to modify
their responses to loved ones' expressed emotions and behaviors
increases the likelihood that situations remain calm and mutual
stress is minimized. Family Educators assess home environments
and suggest adaptations for increased safety and independence.
Family Educators visit with
each family at home and provide written recommendations which
may include:
- Learning to redirect misguided behaviors
- Safety precautions for medications and
household hazards
- Soothing techniques to calm agitation
- Referrals to specialists for expert medical
care and medication review
- Home adaptations
- Adaptations of daily tasks that support
continuing independence
- Help with long-term care options
